UNDERWATER RADIATED NOISE (URN)

EXCELLENCE

The Noise Ship Index (NSI) rewards seagoing ships on their journey in reducing Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) as recommended by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The NSI is for use by shipowners, port authorities, shipyards and coast guards to promote their efforts to reduce their impact on marine biodiversity.

What is the Noise Ship Index?

The principle of the underwater Noise Ship Index (NSI) has been derived from the existing Environmental Ship Index (ESI) for air pollution broadly implemented in most of world's harbors and shipping companies although this is a voluntary initiative.

The Noise Ship Index (NSI) is an independent rating and reward instrument of individual vessels to certify that proper management is taken from shipowners and that the ship is making progress to reduce radiation of underwater noise and to reach her sustainability goals.

It is acknowledged that the route to underwater radiated noise excellence is part of the long term, and is made of a succession of decisions and actions. The NSI therefore rewards the progress as well as the achievements by considering the management and empowerment actions, the diagnostics performed to identify ways to reduce radiated noise, the mitigation and reduction actions and finally the achievements to quieter ship.
